Poolesville Veterinary Clinic Galliprant: a New Osteoarthritis Medication That Is More Targeted Than Current Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Peter H. Eeg BSc, DVM, FASLMS

Galliprant is a first-in-class “piprant”. This is a much more targeted compound than the current non-steroid anti-inflammatory medications that have use in people and animals for the last 30 years. Galliprant is designed to work very far down the chemical pathway that produced the prostaglandin chemicals that promote inflammation and pain to arthritis patients. Working at the EP4 receptor site, it only targets the pain and inflammation aspect of the pathway that creates the pain and discomfort we and our pets feel from arthritis. Being so targeted, it is able to avoid the potential side effects to the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and liver that can happen from the loss of the “housekeeping prostaglandins (beneficial prostaglandins)” that sometimes occurs in higher doses for the currently used medications.

Galliprant has been tested to be safe at up to 15 times the label dose in healthy nine-month-old dogs. There were no noticeable effects on food consumption, body weight, kidney function, liver function, or coagulation parameters to the study patients.

Galliprant was shown to produce significant improvements in pain interference and pain severity at the recommended dose when given only once daily. The tablets are best absorbed on an empty stomach. They are small and easy to administer once daily.

Galliprant represents a very promising new treatment addition for our canine friends suffering from arthritis pain and inflammation. In dogs that are not responding or that have begun to decline in their response to current arthritis medications, Galliprant can be a valuable alternative.

Galliprant is a prescription medication and can only be used under the supervision of your veterinary professional. If you have questions about the possibility of using this medication for your canine friend, please call our office or your regular veterinarian. We will be happy to discuss options with you and your canine friend.
