Peter Eeg, BSC, DVM, FASLMS

Celebrating 30 Years of Service

The great mystery oflife, the Midnight Feline Serenade. Oh he joy of waking up at 1:00 AM to the mournful cry ofyour senior feline friend singing the song of his/her people until the food bowl is full again, or the litter box clean, or the shadows resolve, or the low hum ofthe electrical equipment stops, etc...

Medically the issues that can bring your feline companion to full voice in the wee hours of the morning are as follows;

  • Behavior considerations; fear, noise, hunger, distress or other pets
  • Cognitive dysfunction (the primary reason for abnormal vocalization)
  • Outside activity from wild or feral animals
  • Need for love and attention (more food please)
  • Reduced hearing acuity
  • Osteoarthritis, making it difficult for the cat to perform activities it was previously accustomed to doing.

This slight change to their response to the environment maybe the earliest indication of a problem. If caught early can be improved or recovered. There are many new and current treatments. So don’t hesitate to call your veterinary doctor. Silent night peaceful night to you and your feline buddy.
